No hot water today
Updated October 2026

A cold shower on a work morning is its own kind of emergency. The useful news is that a repair or a like-for-like replacement is often a single-visit job, and a two-minute check before you call can sometimes save you the call-out entirely.
Lake Macquarie Hot Water connects you with licensed local plumbers who do hot water work across the city, from Charlestown and Cardiff to Belmont, Toronto and the southern lake. Send the quote form with a note that you have no hot water and your details go straight through. We do not promise a time, because the plumber's run and what is on their truck decide that, not us.
Check these three things first
- Electric storage: check the switchboard. A tripped circuit breaker or safety switch is the most common cause of a suddenly cold tank, and the fix is free. If it trips again straight away, leave it off and get a licensed plumber or electrician to test it.
- Gas: check the pilot light and that other gas appliances still work. If the cooktop is dead too, the issue may be supply rather than your hot water system. On a bottled LPG property, check whether the cylinder has simply run out, which happens more often than people expect.
- Everything: look at the tank. Water pooling underneath means the cylinder has failed and it is replacement time, no repair will save it.
Repair or replace
If the tank is sound and the fault is a part, a repair usually has hot water back in the one visit. If the tank is leaking or the system is past its lifespan, a like-for-like replacement in common sizes is often also a one-visit job, and the earlier in the day you ask, the better the odds. Either way you get the price before any work starts.
What slows it down here is detail and distance. Lake Macquarie is a big city and a plumber heading to Wangi Wangi, Morisset or Wyee will not come back for a second trip cheaply, so give the system type, the tank size and the brand off the compliance label, and a photo, when you send the form. A plumber who knows what they are driving to can bring the right unit the first time.
What the work costs
Repairs typically run $150 to $600 depending on the part. A like-for-like replacement starts from under $1,200 installed for a smaller electric storage swap and runs higher for gas, continuous flow and larger tanks. All figures are ex GST. After-hours attendance costs more than daytime, so if you can hold out until morning, book the morning.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get hot water back today?
Often, yes. Parts repairs happen on the spot, and common replacement sizes are usually on the truck or a supplier run away. We will not promise it, because it depends on the plumber's day and where you are, and the later you call the more likely it lands tomorrow morning.
My hot water is lukewarm, not cold. Same problem?
Lukewarm usually points to a failing element or thermostat on electric systems, or a tempering valve issue. It is a cheaper fix than a dead system, and worth booking before it becomes one.
Should I turn the system off while I wait?
If the tank is leaking, yes: turn off the power or gas to the unit and close the cold water inlet valve on the tank to slow the leak. If it simply went cold, leave it as it is so the plumber can diagnose it.
The unit outside is rusted through. Is that just age?
Age plus salt, usually. The lake is salt water and the ocean is close, so outdoor tanks, heat pumps and continuous flow units in Lake Macquarie corrode faster than the same unit inland. If the casing or the fittings have gone, ask for a replacement quote at the same time as the repair quote, and ask about a more sheltered position for the new one.
