Repair or replace

The honest rule of thumb: if the tank itself is leaking, the system is done and it is replacement time. If the problem is a valve, element, thermostat or pilot light, a repair is usually the cheaper fix. Most storage systems last 8 to 12 years, and a plumber can tell you quickly which side of that line yours sits on. The cost guide covers what each path typically costs in 2026.

That split is most of the story here. The older housing across the eastern ridge, the Cardiff corridor and the lakeside and mining villages is full of electric storage tanks fitted when the house was last renovated, which is usually the one failing now. The newer estates at Cameron Park, Wyee and parts of Cooranbong are the opposite problem: the unit is young, so a fault there is normally a part rather than a funeral.

Salt is the local problem, and the lake is part of it

Lake Macquarie is Australia's largest coastal saltwater lake, with a permanently open, trained entrance at Swansea and real tidal exchange, so it is salt water rather than fresh. That matters for hot water because it means salt-laden air reaches you from two directions: the ocean on the east and the lake through the middle of the city. A lot of households here live within a kilometre of one or the other.

Heat pumps and continuous flow units live outside, and salt is hard on outdoor heat exchangers, fan assemblies, casings and fittings. It does not make them the wrong choice, because the mild climate here suits a heat pump better than most of the country. It does mean siting matters: sheltered from the salt-bearing wind, off the ground, clear of the sprinklers, and a model with decent corrosion protection. A unit put in the wrong spot on a lakefront or ocean street gives up years earlier than the brochure suggests.

Every system type

The licensed plumbers we work with install and repair electric storage, gas storage, continuous flow, heat pump and solar systems. If you are replacing rather than patching, it is worth pricing a heat pump against a like-for-like swap, because the NSW Energy Savings Scheme certificates described in the cost guide come off the installed price and can close a good part of the gap. If you just want hot water back today, a like-for-like swap is the fastest path.

One caution before you shop for a gas unit. Reticulated natural gas is not available everywhere in Lake Macquarie, and we will not guess for your street. Check availability at your address with your energy retailer or the gas network before you compare gas quotes, and tell the plumber what you actually have. Where there is no gas main, bottled LPG is a real option rather than a footnote, and it changes both the unit and the running cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lake Macquarie Hot Water a plumbing business?

No. It is a referral service for the Lake Macquarie City Council area. You send the form, your details go to a licensed local hot water plumber who works your suburb, and they call you back with a price. The referral costs you nothing and there is no obligation.

How quickly can someone look at it?

That depends on the day, the plumber's run and where you are, so it is their call rather than ours and we do not publish a time. What helps most is detail: the system type, the tank size and brand off the compliance label, and a photo. The city is physically big, and a plumber who knows what they are driving to can often sort it in the one visit.

Do you cover the southern and western lake as well as the Charlestown end?

Yes. Toronto, Rathmines, Wangi Wangi, Morisset, Cooranbong, Dora Creek, Bonnells Bay and Wyee are all part of the service area, along with the western villages. The form asks for your suburb so the job goes to someone who actually works that end of the lake rather than someone facing an hour of driving.
