Quick price guide, installed

What moves the price

Four things change a hot water bill: the system type, the size (a 250L tank for a family costs more than a 125L for a couple), whether the new system matches the old connections, and access. A straight swap on an easy-access tank is the cheap end. Changing fuel type, relocating the unit, or upgrading the electrical circuit or gas line adds to it. After-hours work costs more than a booked job, so if you still have some hot water left, booking tomorrow morning beats paying tonight's rate.

Distance is the local variable. Lake Macquarie is a big council area and the run from the Charlestown end down to Wyee is a serious drive, so a plumber working the far side of the lake may price travel into the job. Give the system type, the tank size and the brand off the compliance label when you book, and the right unit is far more likely to be on the truck the first time.

The NSW scheme question

Heat pump hot water attracts incentives under two streams in NSW: federal Small-scale Technology Certificates and certificates under the NSW Energy Savings Scheme. Both are claimed by the installer on eligible, approved models, and together they genuinely change the maths, taking a system with a large sticker price much closer to a conventional replacement. The catch is that the certificate values move with the market, so the only number that matters is the net installed price on your quote. Ask for it in writing, and ask what brand and model the price is based on.

What the salt air does to the numbers

A hot water system near the ocean or on a lakefront street does not last as long as the same system a few kilometres inland, because the lake is salt water and the air carries it. That shows up in two ways on a quote. First, outdoor units and their fittings reach end of life earlier, so replacement comes around sooner than the brochure life. Second, a careful installer will price a sheltered position, a better bracket or a model with stronger corrosion protection, which costs a little more on the day and much less over ten years. It is worth asking what the quote assumes about placement.

Repair or replace, by the numbers

Spending $400 repairing a four-year-old system is good money. Spending $400 on a twelve-year-old tank that will leak within a year or two is not. The plumbers we work with will tell you the age and condition of your system and give you both numbers, the repair and the replacement, so you can make the call yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a replacement take?

A like-for-like swap is usually done in two to four hours once the plumber has the system on the truck. The earlier in the day you ask, the better the odds of it happening in the one visit, though that is the plumber's call and not something this site will promise.

Is it illegal to install my own hot water system?

In NSW, yes. Hot water installation is licensed plumbing work, gas systems need a licensed gas fitter, and hard-wired electric connections need a licensed electrician. DIY installation can also void insurance and warranty.

What size tank do I need?

As a rough rule: 125L to 160L suits one to two people, 250L suits three to four, and 315L suits larger households. Continuous flow systems are sized by flow rate instead, usually 20 to 26 litres per minute for a family home.

Do prices here include GST?

No. Every range on this page is ex GST, which is how trade quotes are usually built up. Ask the plumber to confirm whether the figure they give you is the GST-inclusive total.
